Migraine Surgery Clinic in San Diego

Those who suffer from migraines know the unendurable pain and constant fear of the next attack. The throbbing headaches, combined with other excruciating symptoms, can leave you debilitated for hours or even days on end. Understandably, migraine sufferers may be desperate to find relief from medications or holistic treatments, many of which are sadly ineffective for severe cases.

Our clinic offers the opportunity to work with our top-tier plastic surgeons and neurologists for a permanent solution to your pain. Our founder, Dr. Bahman Guyuron, has dedicated years of his work to the development of migraine surgery treatment and has written multiple publications on the topic. He has personally trained our team of surgeons (plastic surgeon, Ali Totonchi, MD and neurologist, Hossein Ansari, MD) on these revolutionary techniques. Patients at our migraine surgery clinic in San Diego and across the country have benefitted from this treatment, which has an extremely high success rate. Overview of Migraine Surgery

Studies have shown that eighteen million Americans suffer from this complex neurological disorder that causes severe pain at various points around the head. However, significant medical research has uncovered another promising option for patients: surgical treatment can be a permanent solution to debilitating migraines. This process, which removes critical migraine trigger points by permanently deactivating the nerve(s), offers relief for those who have had little success with other forms of treatment.

Migraines occur when the sensory nerves and vessels in the head are compressed or irritated. The surgical process developed by Dr. Guyuron releases these compression points, decreasing or even eliminating a person’s migraines. Using endoscopy or other techniques, small incisions are made to remove surface tissue and decompress the nerve at the trigger site, essentially deactivating it.

Studies have shown that 80-90% of properly selected patients respond positively to the surgery, defined by complete elimination or at least 50% reduction in headache severity or duration.

Results to Expect from Migraine Surgery

All our migraine surgeries are done on an outpatient basis, and patients usually can return home a couple of hours after the procedure. A patient’s postoperative course will depend on how many trigger points have been operated on (it is typical for this surgery to involve more than one). Patients may have a small drain after surgery that will typically be removed two to three days after the operation.

Our team will prescribe pain medications for surgical pain, which usually lasts a few days. A patient may also experience a migraine headache on the night of the surgery, but migraine symptoms should improve quickly. Final results are usually evaluated three to six months after the surgery. Patients will work with our experienced neurologist Dr. Ansari to adjust migraine medications accordingly as their pain reduces over time.
